SAINT JOSEPH: CLAY TILE & COPPER RESTORATION

At Saint Joseph Catholic Church & School in Bryan, Texas, Velco Roofing completed a restoration valued at more than $1.4 million, bringing together Ludowici clay tile roofing, project-specific copper fabrication, an insulation upgrade, and interior restoration. The work balanced the architectural character of the church with the technical demands of a functioning church and school.

Ludowici clay tile: color composed by hand. Every tile was laid out and individually hand-blended for placement, distributing variations in color and tone across the roof. This deliberate process created a cohesive field of clay tile without conspicuous patches of mismatched color.

Custom copper and a code-compliant roof assembly. Copper gutters and fascia were designed exclusively for the project, joining water-management function with carefully considered architectural detail. A specially designed insulation solution brought the roof assembly’s R-value up to code. The original church reference letter provides further discussion of the design specifications.

Restoration around daily life. Scaffolding and protective measures accommodated parishioners and children attending school during the day. Interior repainting addressed storm-related roof leaks; specialized rented equipment provided access over antique chapel benches to the center of the vaulted ceilings. Work around the pipe organs and on the seven-story bell tower demanded particular care, with scheduling coordinated around weekly Sunday services.

A sustained, carefully sequenced undertaking. Approval of the wind-damage claim took nearly two years. Material delivery required a further three months, followed by a four-month installation. The completed project demonstrates Velco’s ability to coordinate specialty roofing, architectural copper, and interior restoration within an active worship and educational setting.
